Travel

Have you had the opportunity to travel lately? Or have you—like so many of us—had to cancel excursion after much anticipated excursion during the ebbs and flows of COVID-19? Our own family had to forgo a long-awaited journey to Europe in April 2020 and then, just a couple of weeks ago, a sightseeing trip to Washington DC.

So I sometimes find myself feeling very much like Millay: endeavoring to appreciate the gifts of being right where I am while knowing that “there isn’t a train I wouldn’t take, no matter where it’s going.”

Which train would you hop if it rumbled by your house today?

Travel

by Edna St. Vincent Mallay

The railroad track is miles away,
And the day is loud with voices speaking,
Yet there isn’t a train goes by all day
But I hear its whistle shrieking.

All night there isn’t a train goes by,
Though the night is still for sleep and dreaming,
But I see its cinders red on the sky,
And hear its engine steaming.

My heart is warm with the friends I make,
And better friends I’ll not be knowing,
Yet there isn’t a train I wouldn’t take,
No matter where it’s going.
